The Honduras government said on Friday that Yanela Varela, the girl in one of Time in tears against Donald Trump, had not been separated from her family, as the photo implied.
“The girl, who is going to be two years old, has not been separated” from her parents, told AFP the head of the Directorate of Protection of Migrants at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Honduras, Lisa Medrano.
The One of Time, revealed Thursday, shows Donald Trump overlooking a girl in tears, whose photo has largely helped to alert the public, with the simple title: “Welcome to America.”
The magazine published the photo of the little girl to show it alone, against a red background, and the image was widely used on social networks by the opponents of Trump to denounce his policy, since abandoned, to separate the families of illegal immigrants.
The girl’s father, Denis Varela, also confirmed to the Washington Post that his wife Sandra Sanchez, 32, had not been separated from Yanela and that the two are currently being held in a migrant center in the town of McAllen, in Texas.
Between May 5 and June 9, more than 2,300 minors were separated from their parents, under the US president’s “zero tolerance” policy, causing a stir and pushing Donald Trump to sign Wednesday, in a shattering reversal , a decree ending these separations.
